Mielialan voi ottaa puheeksi esimerkiksi kysymällä: "Millaiseksi olet kokenut mielialasi
viime aikoina?"
Mahdollisista itsetuhoisista ajatuksista tai ajatuksista itsensä vahingoittamiseen
tulee kysyä.
Säännöllinen arviointi soveltuvilla validoiduilla arviointivälineillä voi auttaa arvioimaan,
milloin lähete mielenterveyden ammattilaisen vastaanotolle on tarpeen. Oireiden lieventyessä
on tarpeen seurata mahdollista uusiutumista «Lustman PJ, Griffith LS, Clouse RE. Depression in ...»1.
Mielialan ja masennuksen arvioinnissa, hoidossa ja ohjauksessa on tärkeää huomioida
sairauden ja omahoidon kuormitukset sekä se, että veren glukoosipitoisuuden vaihtelut,
suuret ja pienet glukoosipitoisuudet ja esimerkiksi pitkään suurentuneina olleet glukoosipitoisuudet
(hyperglykemia) voivat vaikuttaa mielialaan ja jaksamiseen.
Ohjauksessa tulee huomioida ja keskustella myös mahdolliset pitkään jatkuneen hyperglykemian
ja verenglukoosin vaihteluiden kognitiiviset vaikutukset (mm. keskittyminen, muisti
ja aloitekyky).
